E. coli

  • ‘Salmon’ red colonies
  • Causes 70 – 80% of UTIs
  • No common antibiotic resistance profile

(Photos show colonies that have grown at various densities from 103 to ≥105 cfu/ml)

Klebsiella/Enterobacter sp. (Coliforms)

  • Dark blue/purple colonies
  • Causes 3-5% of UTIs
  • Resistance to Cephalothin and Nitrofurantoin is not uncommon

Enterococcus sp.

  • Small, greenish/blue colonies
  • Causes up to 15% of UTIs
  • Resistance to Cephalothin and Ciprofloxacin is not uncommon.
