Identification Photos 2  (Pure or Predominant Growth)

Proteus sp.

  • Large, light brown colonies. The agar will also be stained brown around the colonies.
  • Causes 2-4 % of UTIs
  • Resistance to Nitrofuranotin and Cephalothin is not uncommon

Pseudomonas aeruginosa

  • Large, grey white/greenish colonies, with a metallic tinge. The agar may take on greenish colour .
  • The bacteria  will have a sweet smell
  • Causes <2% of UTIs
  • Resistance to Cepthalothin, Amox/Clav, Nitrofurantoin and Trimethoprim is not uncommon

Staphylococcus saprophyticus

  • Small white/reddish(pink) colonies
  • Causes 5– 10%  of UTIs
  • No common resistance profile
